Would and could

Hello. I am confused of something in the following passage: "When it came time for me to prepare for marriage, (1) how would I be able to prepare? (1) Who would help me? I didn’t know that there were agencies that (2) I could have applied for. No one in my friends had got married, (1) how would I know?". It is known that the person didn't get married at that time in the past. So, should the underlined and 1-numbered parts be "how would I have been able to prepare" instead of "how would I be able to prepare", "who would have helped me?" instead of "who would help me, and "how would I have known?" instead of "how would I know" because they were in the past, or may they be right because maybe the person is telling these parts from the past? Also, should the underlined and 2-numbered part be "I could apply"? or may it be like in the passage because the person is likely not to have applied for the agencies? Thank you.
