'Would' after 'if'

Hello everybody,

I need help with following sentence:

'I took that faulty kettle back to the shop and asked the assistant if they would change it for me.'

I was always told that modal verbs can't be after "if" but I'm not really sure if it isn't some kind of exception or maybe it isn't a conditional at all. I'm staring at the sentence for too long, so it seems all wrong to me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It is not a conditional. It is a reported question.
