Would

In that time, there was no sentimentality
attached to Jesus' death and certainly not to the cross, a horrifying
symbol in Roman antiquity. In what way any of this
could be termed "good news" (the meaning of the word
"gospel") would be far from clear to jews and Gentiles alike.

Is it would used for assumption/conjecture? If so, since they discuss the past should it not be would have been far from clear.

Vladv since they discuss the past should it not be would have been far from clear But you are OK with "could be"? I am. The writer just followed suit with "would be".

Yes, as a matter of logic, but the writer is transporting us readers back to the time when this was all happening, so as a matter of style the passage is all right as written.
