Would

My children don't shout in the street, but Thomas's would.
What is the grammatical function of "would" and which meaning of "would" is used here? Thanks

"would" is a modal verb as usual, and "Thomas's would" is short for "Thomas's children would shout in the street". This describes an imagined situation. It is also suggestive of the children's will or volition.
