In the army, soldiers are recognized by their last name. The people who have been friends in the army for years wouldn't know each others' first name.

Is would correct in the sentence? What could be the implied if clause by the context?

People who have been friends in the army for years wouldn't know each other's first names . It could imply "wouldn't know if they were asked" or something similar, or it could just be that the author wanted to avoid the definiteness of "don't know".
