Why is WOULD used in the dialogue below?

Benson: Look, I did not want to bother you with this.You know that I called David.

Jerry: David? Why WOULD you pull his tie?

Benson: We worked a case together last month. Anyway I just want you to know how much I appreciate it.

A dialogue is an entire conversation. You were asking about "a line of dialogue".

"would" makes it a modal tense, and the reference is to present
