If you are concerned about past perfect, then why did you title your post 'Would'? There is no call for past perfect in your context because all of the actions are occurring at about the same time in the past or the order of past events is clear.

It is OK, but you still don't really need past perfect. Compare these two sentences:

When Mary arrived, I finished eating.
When Mary arrived, I had finished eating.

Past perfect is required in the 2nd one to make it clear that his eating
