Would

Hi,

Do the highlighted WOULDs show to future time? Or speakers are not sure about the actions in future that is why using WOULD?

1- A:I would say she is little bit spoiled, as pretty as her mother, prettier that her father, a little too independent, and the spitting image of that girl.

2- A: I never would have worried about your living alone here if I knew there were a bloodhound down the hall.
B: Yes, and she is pretty good. And we have not had burglar here in two years.
A: A picture in the lobby would accomplish the same the thing.

3- A: There is no reason for you not to stay with me.
B: I would be only in your way. B: You certainly would.

4- A: How do you like the veal? B: Not bad, not bad.
A: You know you would pay $8 for that in high class restaurant?
B: No kidding, what would you pay for it at your restaurant?

MFarooq 1- A:I would say she is little bit spoiled, as pretty as her mother, prettier that her father, a little too independent, and the spitting image of that girl. "I would say" is referring to a hypothetical or imagined situation, but in practice the effect of "would" is to soften or distance the statement. "I would say" is almost a set phrase.

Thank you for your help. I just want to confirm that in the situation no 1,3 and 4. Are speakers referring to future? Are they imaging these situations in future?

Read carefully GPY's comments. When "would" is used in the 2nd type of conditionals, it refers to the present or future. If it is used in the 3rd type of conditionals, it refers to the past. W

How do you know that conditional 2 is being used for present or future if it is used for both.
