Would

Hi,

Please,let me know the use of "would"according to grammar in the following sentences.

I would think that Masha would find it easier to relate to somebody who was more focused on competencies.I would not be surprised if she were early on,more focused on Dad.

MFarooq I would think that 'would' is a hedge word here. It softens the claim, makes it less direct. I think that softens a claim, and adding 'would' softens it even more.
