Would

Suppose somebody has a injured leg and his leg is bleeding and it's not stopping. Can I say,'try to do what would be more effective to stop bleeding' with this situation? If yes what does would mean here? Is it a conditional would?

I understand 'would' is used for imagined situation as Califjim said. But here there is no imagination. He really has an injured leg. So how is would correct in the sentence? Please help. I am getting more confused.
