The Argentine would clip home a brilliant third shortly after the hour mark, though Barca were not able to hold onto their clean sheet when Raul Tamudo poked home a consolation for Rayo with 20 minutes to go.
Why is "would" used in a past tense situation like this?What meaning does it add in the sentence ?

This is a good question. It's not necessary to use would, like you said everything else is in the past tense. I think the writer was just trying to give some variation to his sentences. I don't think it's being used incorrectly, but I don't think it really adds anything to the sentence.
