Would

Hello! Could you help me?

Here is a sentence: "After I'd started making the sandwiches I'd realise that I hadn't got everything I needed for all the different fillings." My question is about the extract "I'd realise": is it "I would realise" and what is the grammatical function of the verb "would" here? If it means "I used to realise" then how is it possible. I read that the verb "would" is used olny with the verbs of action in this meaning. Thank you very much!

I'd can be both I would and I had.

Both of which are in the past tense mode.

would is a modal verb and also the past tense of the word will.
