Would

I would have thought that he would have played better than he had played/did play.



I thought he would have played better than he did play/ had played.

May I have the usage of 'would' here, please?

Only 'did play' is correct, right?

I assume it is grammatical to include 'play', but preferrable, and more idiomatic, to omit it.

And 'would' here is not used for an implied conditional, right? It's used to express hope/opinion...

The omission of 'play' is all but mandatory. It is only 'grammatical' for instructional purposes. Any editor would delete it.

Well, the 'would' is conditional, but 'hope' etc is one of its uses.
