Hey all:
A question about "would". A divorced couple are arguing about the wife's new husband as to whether he is good to his son:
The mother to the her ex: "you think I would put our son in danger?"
What function is the word would?

Hi, I am not particularly trying to answer your question but I am more trying to find out the answer to your question myself since I have the similar (same) problems in using or finding out the reason for the use of the modal "would" in sentences. I usually struggle to find out what function the modal "would" have in sentences. I wish to get some help if I could.
