I have a question about the word would, before i can enjoy my thanksgiving.

two police officers are talking about a suspect.
A: His hand has birth defects. Would he be able to shoot a gun?

What is the function and meaning of the word would here?

The function of would is to put us in an imaginary world where he tries to shoot a gun and we ask if that's possible. Does he succeed in shooting the gun in this imaginary scenario? Or does he fail because of his hand? Of course, he doesn't actually try to shoot the gun at all, because this is all taking place in our imaginations.
