would

Hello,

I have to use "would " to express regular action in the past.

1. Evry night we pleaded with him to sleep early, but he pretended not to hear.

a) Every night we would plead with him to sleep early, but he would pretend not to hear.

b) Every night we pleaded with him to sleep early, but he would pretend not to hear.

Which one is correct? (a or b)

Top answer

I think b) is best because "every night" helps express the habit of pleading. Therefore, would is not really necessary in that clause.

To me, correct means not wrong.

I would say all your sentences are correct.

<If we change the above sentence to the Simple past tense, it would become: Every night we pleaded with him to sleep early, but he pretended not to hear.>

No, I didn't say that "would" has to be removed, I said I prefered it without.

Sorry for having misunderstood what you said. But what do you think of the following which I asked in that post.

I would like to ask whether "to sleep early" is correct or should it "to go to sleep early" or "to go to bed early".

Every night we plead with him to sleep early, but he pretends not to hear.

<I would like to ask whether "to sleep early" is correct or should it "to go to sleep early" or "to go to bed early".>

All three.

I would not say that "to sleep early" is natural sounding.

I would recommend "to got to bed early" as my first choice and "to go to sleep early" is the second choice. I don't consider "to sleep early" correct.

Edited: Also - get to sleep early sounds okay.

But also - do you possibly mean "earlier" rather than early? What is early? 7 p.m.? 10 p.m.? It depends on yo

Everything except "sleep early" sounds normal to my American ears. I doubt I'd choose to say "sleep early" voluntarily, but rather would say something similar to what Barbara described.
