Would

"While I was in my apartment for three months my friends would come over and deliver food."

Why is an auxiliary verb "would" used here?
This person was making a speech about his past, and the sentence was not in direct.
Does this auxiliary verb in this sentence have a special meaning?????

Many thanks for your help.
