Worth the salt

Hi,

Scholar A found a book which he couldn't understand,

A conversation between A and B,

B: But you didn't sell it (the book)
A: No, I like a puzzle, as you know. SO does every scholar worth his salt. It's the reward of business, to look history in the eye and say, 'I know who you are. You can't fool me'

*question: I think the salt is sweating, it simply mean worth his effort, my question is whether 'worth the salt' can be commonly apply in all cases, because the effort it takes for every task vary greatly, and not every task takes sweating. It seems odd to me, a scholar study and write, both these are not 'sweaty' tasks, you can read till blind or write till multilated your fingers without a single bead on your forehead- being scholar is brain work, *not physical.

Or it meant something else, which I'll be very curious to hear.

Some examples on 'worth the salt', can I have it?

Thanks.

  • Yes, you lose your salt by sweating, but I don't associate "sweat" with the expression.
  • Yes, the expression may be generally applied to ask if, or suggest that, this is a good (valuable) man.
