I've been in the nursing business for more than 20 years and, as you can probably imagine, have experienced a lot of good but also bad things. I think I could fill a whole book with my stories.
One particularly bad day will always stay in my mind and it seems as if it happened just yesterday. I was a very young nurse assistant and was about to start my first job. The night before, I slept fitfully and unsurprisingly didn't hear my alarm clock. I jumped out of bed , just washed my face and ran to the railway station in order to catch my train. I was so relieved that my train was still on the platform and I slumped into the seat. Suddenly, I heard an announcement. To my horror I realised that I had caught the wrong train. It went in the opposite direction! I had to call the nursing home to inform them that I would be late on my first day at work. How embarrassing!
Having arrived at my workplace, I came just in time for the coffee break. My new colleagues were very understanding and offered me a cup of coffee. Still reeling from my experience I managed to tip over my cup and the whole mess landed in my new new boss's lap. I had never been so mortified in my life. I still wonder why she didn't sack me straight away.
Now I can laugh about that day and I tell all new employees about it. It's a good story to break the ice when someone starts work.
