"Worse" or "worst"?

Hello,

Which adjective should I use in these sentences?

"What's worse/worst is that he might get fired."

"It's worse/worst if you come along."

It's worse/worst to be here on Sundays."

I tried to replace these with "best" and "better but I still find that "worst" doesn't sound natural to me in these sentences.

Please help me explain this.

Eren8hisfather I tried to replace these with "best" and "better but I still find that "worst" doesn't sound natural to me in these sentences. "Worst" is possible if there are more than two alternatives, but the "worse" in the formula " pronoun's worse" is a little figurative, and that makes the literal "worst" sound odd when you shoehorn it in. The effect is especially noticeable in "what's worse/worst" because "what's worse" is a fixed expression.

  • The effect disappears with "it's better/best", and "what's better/best" is quite awkward.
