Worried teachers

"Teachers don't need to worry too much – English as a whole is not changing fast, and most of the language will stay the same for some time to come. But it's important to keep an eye on what is happening, so as to be able to answer students' questions about new usage, and to be able to modify traditional explanations as this becomes necessary. "

From: What is happening in English? By Michael Swan.

Teachers and students: do you agree with the part in blue? Is it important for teachers to do that?

(Miss MB, love you. Don't let the B's get you down.)

as a student of ELT,i think teachers should keep up with time and they should develop their knowledge with the help of their prior knowledge to explain students' questions, but there is no need to worry. For teachers, keeping an eye on what is happening to language is a duty. That's why we call them as TEACHERS:)

But, in the ESL/EFL world, not many do their duty. There's just lots of old fuddies teaching limiting and outdated stuff.
