World War/ other wars with 'the'

World War I

World War II

The Korean War

The Vietnam War

The French and Indian War

I found most of the wars have a definite article the while World War I and II have not the.

Is there a reason or no reason?

Good question, Moon. Perhaps the answer lies in the scale of the wars. Both World War I and II involved nearly the entire planet and there is no need for a definite article because it was so widespread and fought on so many different fronts.

  • The Korean War was, on the other hand, localized and fought only in North and South Korea.
  • It's the same for The American Civil War (The Civil War) and The Vietnam (first called The War in Indochina by the French).
