World Englishes
The aim of this essay is to remove the misunderstanding of World Englishes. As a global means of communication all around the world, English has become a world language or an international language. Then, World Englishes have been appeared everywhere. What is World Englishes? World Englishes are commonly defined as nationalized varieties of English. As you have noticed, there are many Englishes: British, American, Australian, Indian, Hongkong, African, Singaporean and many others. There are many differences in grammar, word and even in pronunciation between Englishes.
The use of World Englishes have grown in importance in light of Globalization. However, there are misconceptions in terms of features they have. One of the striking misconceptions about World Englishes is that the English of British or America are superior to that of India, Africa or Singapore. It is undeniable that World Englishes are derived from the Englishes of British or America but it doesn't necessarily mean that those Englishes are substandard. Parents, those who put much efforts on their children's education, seem to believe that the native teacher of their children should be American or English. For that reason, they don't care paying premiums. As for me it is a waste.
Another misconstruction of World Englishes is that considering the differences in Englishes as errors compare to the English of America or British. As I mentioned in the second paragraph, variations exist in grammar, word and pronunciation. All these variations are a reflection of the culture where an English is being used. For instance, students of Korea, Japan, China often miss out 's' at the end of a third singular form, make plural form on uncountable noun and put preposition after a transitive verb. To learn English, if we make American or British English our model, our effort to learn English would be unattainable and inappropriate. Again, we need English that is appropriate to our own language and culture.
People say that there are three functions in every languages. It is a means of communication, it represents the identity of the people and finally it represents culture. As long as these functions are achieved, the language itself is worth exist. The upshot is that a command of one of these Englishes is vitally important for everyone. Neither is superior nor inferior.
