Workmen's wages / salaries

I have a question regarding workmen and their wages or/and salaries in the following sentence.

The workmen struck to obtain an increase of their [ wages / salaries ].

A book says that wages sounds more natural, and I guess it has something to do with the definition of workmen but I don't see any good reason.

Will someone help me?

Thank you, Clive.

'Pay' and 'workers' are more neutral (with less discriminatory meaning) than 'wages', 'salaries' and 'workmen. Is that right?
