Working action verb

I have been working since I was 18. I know that work is a verb here. How do I know if work is an action verb? I can understand walk, run, laugh as action verbs as I can see the action happening but find it difficult to visualise the same for the verb "work".

That may be chopping wood, delivering heavy packages, climbing up ladders to fix roofs, installing carpets, or doing acrobatics in a circus.
