Work vs works?

A friend of mine had a conversation with his primarily french girlfriend that went like this:

GF: Does it works?

BF: No No dear, it doesn't work like that. In English we say "Does it work?" no "s".

BF: Oh, and yes it works.

Naturally she had a confused look due the fact that he seemed to have contradicted himself.

Why is it that in one instance work has an s and in another it doesn't.

Any help is appreciated.
