Work the field or work hard in fhe field?

Hi. Please help. Which is correct? We are talking about an old farmer.

(The farmer talking)

1. Since I am very old, now it is hard for me to work hard in the field.
2. Since I am very old, now it is hard for me to work the field.

I think either could be correct with slightly different meanings. To "work hard in the field" is obviously to exert effort in the field (and sounds better to me), but to "work the field" might also be an accepted phrase in... farmer lexicon?

The phrase "work in the field" can refer to any field work. You could be a humanitarian working in the field or a detective working in the field. But it can also mean "cultivating crops ("field" in this case refers to an area of land where you grow crops"".
