Work on

I am not sure what it exacly means by ' work on' and its usage. Can I say as follows by using ' work on'? Also, if you see any mistakes in the following sentences, can I have your comments?

(teacher to students)

If your grammatcial mistakes affect readers' understadning of your papers, it is called ' global mistakes', but if your mistkaes does not greatly affect readrs understadning, it is called ' local mistakes'. mistkaes about ' verb tenses' belong to global mistakes and today we will work on ' verb tense'
