Work leads.

This is from speach and I don't remember the exact context but here it is:

We are starting to work leads as they are coming in.

So I understand leads as some kind of possibility here.

but how can one work leads?

operate the possibility or make use of possibility? I don't know what work and lead mean in this case.

With no further context, I would guess one of two things.

In a police context, a "lead" is a piece of information that might help to solve a crime. The police are investigating these as they receive them.

In a business context, a "lead" is information about a potential customer. The sales team are following these up as they receive them.
