Work experience, placement?

Hello,

Once a week our teacher takes us to a primary school to obeserve classes. Apart from observing, each of us had to run a class ourselves. What do you call this? Is it work experience, placement, internship or something else?

If possible, I'd love to know both American and British terms.

Thank you
