Work as (a?) consultant

Hello

When talking about your job, you have to use the indefinite article. For example,

He is a teacher. (He is teacher.)

Do we have to use the indefinite article in the following sentence as well?

He works as (a) consultant.

And would the same go for "serve as" and "act as"?

Thanks in advance.
