Work a job or do a job

I was watching 'Fight Club' and in one scene a character says 'we're working jobs we hate so we can buy sh*t we don't need'. I haven't heard of 'working a job' before. Is that correct? Or should I say 'We are doing job we hate ...' Thanks!
