Words "reaffirm" and "recirculate"

How do I know when to use a hyphen in words that have the prefix "re"?

The word "reaffirm" does not have a hyphen because i found it in the dictionary without one, but the word "recirculate" is not there so I'm assuming it has a hyphen? Is that correct? How do I know when to use (or not to use) the hyphen? Thanks, Tara

The dictionary is your most authoritative source. There is no rule; it is a process of evolution. You should be aware, however, that many unilingual dictionaries do not include separate entries for all of the words accepting our most common prefixes, but satisfy themselves with listing the most common under the entry for the prefix.
