Words for men who like kids

I am writing an english report about how hard it is for single moms to find a man. Since English is not my first language, I have a little troubles finding the right term for a man who like kids (as caring and treating the kids as if he was their real dad). Any suggestions?

The best I can come up with is 'He's very paternal' or 'He has a paternal nature'. You've got to be very careful about saying a man likes or loves children. People will think you mean that he's a paedophile.

Maybe 'a man who is good with kids'.

Forgive me for saying that I think this warning is much too extreme.
There are lots of contexts where such words would be fine and normal, and only a few where they would be taken negatively.

And unfortunately, a forum website is one of them. I was very fearful when I clicked on this thread in the menu.

The negative meaning never even occurred to me when I read the thread's title!

Which demonstrates from our sample so far that there is a 50% chance of the phrase being taken as relating to paedophilia.

Fortunately, it's not something that is usually said without a modicum of context.
