words ending in the letter S

having a debate and hoping for an answer, did a search but can't find the answer.....
How to pronounce a word ending in S with possession...example- This is James's desk. Do you say the last S in James's or is it silent? Hard to type when it's so much easier to say it and ask. A friend says that when you say the sentence "this is James's desk" you say it as if the last S is silent, I argue that when you say James's you pronounce the S's twice. Thank you all!!
