John Aki Suggest (A bit weaker than advise) Advise (A good idea or thing to do, pretty much same as recommend) Urge (A strong advice) Desire (A strong wish) More or less you have the right idea, but you are not differentiating very clearly between verbs and nouns, and it is not clear in some cases whether the parts in brackets are meant as definitions or verb objects. "advise" and "recommend" have broadly similar kinds of meanings, but they can be used in different patterns, and are not necessarily interchangeable in use. For example, you can say "I thoroughly recommend this book" but not "I thoroughly advise this book".

  • Also, you can say "I advise you to ~", whereas "I recommend you to ~" is frowned on (in my opinion it is incorrect), albeit quite commonly used.
  • Instead, we should say "I recommend that you ~".
