wording and grammar

Can someone check the wording, grammar and tense of the question-
'How extreme is fashion identified through body transformation in the 18th century?'
is it 'is or was' fashion identified...? is 'through' used correctly?

Top answer

Was is correct, since you are speaking of a past era, and through is fine. However, the meaning of the sentence is a little unclear. Did you mean How extreme was the body transformation in fashion during the 18th century?

I think "body transformation" refers to changing the shape of the body by means of devices such as "stays," which squeezed the torso into a cone shape. It may also refer to hoops worn beneath dresses to accentuate the hip, but these didn't actually transform the body; they just created an illusion.
