Wording advice please?

Hi,

Could you please help me with these wording?


It is a [ pity / shame ] that party was canceled. (Both words are interchangeable? almost same meaning?)

I [ pity / symphonize ] these homeless. (Same as above?)

I feel [ pity / sympathy ] for these orphans. (same as above?)


Who will have to [ account for / answer for ] this mistakes. (Both are same meaning)

He is [ accountable / responsible ] for this mistakes. (Same as above)
