Wording advice please?

Hi,

Could you please check for me if I have made any mistake in these wordings?

Could life [ subsist / sustain ] on Mars? (Both of them are correct and possible?)

He [ subsisted / sustained ] with limited water only in the desert. (Same above?)

Life is not sustainable on Mars.

Cheers
