Word usage

I want to be able to describe a "family." in the following sentence and context. Which sentence is correct?

1. It is a great family. Or

2. They are a great family.

As I write this text, I am brainstorming and producing more sentences to try to figure out the best way to say it.

So, if

3. That is a great family. Then

4. It is a great family.

Can someone clear my confusion please? Thanks.
