Word stressing: Is "per" in the sentence stressed?

Pressure is defined as force per unit area.

How about the tone? How to get the up and down rhythm? Need advice on this one too.

Top answer

"per" may have secondary stress or may be unstressed, depending on individual speaker variation. "force" and "unit" have a higher pitch; this may continue through "per", or "per" may fall in pitch, depending on individual speaker variation.
