Word Stress

Words can be stressed in the first syllable, second syllable or third syllable.
a) 1st syllable: morning, evening
b) 2nd syllable: today, tomorrow
c) 3rd syllable: afternoon, engineer
Are these words stressed in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd syllable?
a) tonight
b) vacation
c) language
d) university
e) saturday
f) conversation

Assuming italics are supposed to show the stressed syllable, no. Several of your answers are wrong. You know, you can just look those words up in a dictionary to check your work. That way you can even listen to the pronunciation because most online dictionaries have an audio button. Have you tried that yet?

There is no general formula. You should be able to hear where the stress is if you hear the word pronounced correctly.
