Word starting with G?

Could you help me find out what the speaker said in a TV drama? It starts with “g,” meaning studious, hardworking. I think it’s more like a slang word. I couldn’t get exactly what he said, but the subtitle gave me a clue. It’s not a “geek.”

The only thing that comes to mind is “grunt work” - Work that is tedious and hard.

Interns and foot soldiers are called “grunts.”

Found it. "Gunner" is medical slang for an over-ambitious, cutthroat medical student.
