Word 'reference'

Hello.

I have the following sentence.

"Given are an eye point O (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus), a horizontal plane of reference called the ground plane ? and a picture plane p... "

How could you explain the word reference? I know the translation. And it means to referring thing to smth. But in this context i can't catch it up...
