Word Order and Meaning.

I have come across this sentence recently:

On 23rd July I rented a Vauxhall Insignia at Gatwick Airport. As the clutch stopped working and started to smoke and smell I had to park the car in Lewis one hour later.

I am not a native speaker and I am not sure about its meaning:

Does it mean that the writer was driving for another hour until he/she parked the car - which must be an awful experience - or could it also mean that the driver used the vehicle for one hour after the rental, found out about the damage and then parked the car?

I would be glad to read your answers.

Given the sloppy writing it's impossible to say for sure but I would take it to mean that the car worked for an hour then experienced the problems.
