word order after infinitive with to

Do you say : the most important lesson I've learned has been to not be afraid of failure or the most important lesson I've learned has been not to be afraid of failure ?

Top answer

Either one is OK, but there are some picky grammarians who insist that an infinitive must not ever be split. To be on the safe side, use this one: T he most important lesson I've learned is has been not to be afraid of failure.
