Word order?

I came across the following expression.

I find myself making an inane reply like, "Well, better that than the alternative."

The usual order is supposed to be something like "Well, that is better than the alternative." Is this order common in conversation?

Thank you very much. Is this acceptable in written English, too?

Yes, in casual writing. But it's more a feature of spoken English.
