Word order

Never has he seen her before.
He has never seen her before.

I get that these are both correct english but a friend learning english asked me why they are both correct and I do not know how to answer her.

Please help!

Both are grammatical, but the second one is what you would hear today. The first one is old-fashioned-sounding and would only be heard in poetry, or if the speaker is trying for an effect.
