Word necessity

Is the article required, not required or optional in the below sentences:

1. First win against Nadal in (the) last 15 matches.
2. That is his first win against Nadal in (the) last 15 matches.

I think it is optional in the first and required in the second!

Top answer

The first is not complete sentence, so the presence or absence of the article is not important. It's required in the second.

Thanks teacher. So is it always the case that when a sentence is not complete it is ok to omit articles and be more flexible in terms of not including every word as in a complete sentence?
