I've understood more or less everything, but what would be the difference between "Joe is backing the wrong horse" and "Joe is supporting the wrong horse?"

The verbs are similar, but not always interchangeable:

Joe is backing the wrong horse. = Joe is betting on the wrong horse. (Support does not have this meaning.)

He is supporting his brother. = He provides his brother with food, housing, and expenses.
He is backing his brother. = He argues (to other people) that what his brother says is right.
